Detective Bureau
Criminal investigations into major and property crimes.
The Detective Bureau is responsible for investigating major crimes, including homicide, assault, robbery, and other violent offenses, as well as property crimes such as burglary and theft.
To better serve our community, the Detective Bureau also includes a dedicated Special Victims Unit (SVU) that investigates sexual assault cases involving both juveniles and adults.
Sergeant Bryan Kohler
Sergeant Kohler has served with the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office since 1998, after graduating from the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office Academy. After earning his OPOTA certification, he began his career as an Auxiliary assigned to the Narcotics Unit.
In 2001, Sergeant Kohler was assigned to the Jail Bureau before transferring to the Patrol Bureau, where he served from 2001 to 2003. He joined the Detective Bureau in 2003, where he has served since. He was promoted to Detective Corporal in 2023 and to Detective Sergeant in 2024.
Sergeant Kohler has been a certified Computer Voice Stress Analyst for more than 18 years, conducting criminal, pre-employment, and covert examinations. He also earned a degree in Law Enforcement Technology from Columbus State Community College.

The Detective Bureau also assists other law enforcement agencies with complex investigations and provides specialized investigative resources as needed.
Special Victims Unit
The Special Victims Unit investigates sexual offenses, Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) cases, Child Protective Services referrals, Adult Protective Services referrals, missing juveniles, and missing or endangered adults.
